Improvisational song writing can be used to create a framework for supporting emotional states.

Weaving the words and stories of a client into a song can help to validate and transform the client's experiences. Singing familiar songs can provide a catalyst for intellectually and emotionally stimulating discussions.

Music psychotherapy uses music within a therapeutic relationship to sustain, restore, and/ or improve emotional, cognitive, and physical health. Music is a powerful tool when working with older adults who suffer from memory loss as musical idioms and songs trigger memory and its accompanying emotions.

A range of techniques can be used depending on the strengths and needs of the client.
